WHO flags 7 India-made cough syrups

New Delhi, 20/06/2023: During an investigation into tainted medicines and syrups connected to over 300 deaths worldwide, the World Health Organisation has identified seven India-made syrups.

The WHO spokesperson confirmed that the institution had identified 20 syrups manufactured by pharmaceutical companies in India and Indonesia.

Cough syrups and vitamins made by several pharmaceutical companies are among these medications. WHO also raised medical product alerts on India-made cough syrups that were earlier linked to Gambia and Uzbekistan deaths.

Several countries, including Uzbekistan, Gambia, and Nigeria, have recently connected India-made pharmaceuticals to fatalities

The Indian drug controller had immediately began investigating manufacturers such as Noida’s Marion Biotech, Haryana’s Maiden Pharmaceuticals, Chennai’s Global Pharma, and Punjab’s QP Pharmachem, stopping their operations.

According to sources at the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), the national regulatory body for cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices, the Health Ministry’s new mechanism for ensuring that all medicines are tested for quality control before export will now ensure corrective measures are in place.
