New Delhi (India), April 30, 2023: A shocking incident took place at Chennai airport on Friday as a woman passenger was apprehended for smuggling 22 snakes of different species and a chameleon.
The woman arrived from Kuala Lumpur and was found carrying the reptiles in plastic containers inside her check-in luggage. Chennai Customs confirmed the incident on their Twitter handle, and the woman has been arrested under the Customs Act, 1962, read with the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
According to sources, these exotic species are in high demand in the grey market and are often smuggled to other parts of South and North India. The Tamil Nadu Forrest Department has increased its vigilance over passengers entering the state with exotic species. The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of air travel as well as the illegal trade of wildlife.
