- The Congress party established a finest precedent in the empowerment of women when the Congress-led UPA Government was in power at the Centre, as on the one hand, Smt. Sonia Gandhi was the chairperson of the UPA, Smt. Pratibha Patil was appointed the first woman President of the country while Smt. Meera Kumar was appointed the first woman Speaker of Lok Sabha—Ajay Maken.
NEW DELHI, Jan. 17—Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Shri Ajay Maken said it was the Congress party which took serious initiative to empower women, as well as to give women strength and power in politics. He said this while addressing a meeting on the faulty implementation of demonetization, which brought misery to people, particularly women, organized by NGO Jwala Brigade (Eek Aag) at the Constitution Club here today.
Besides Shri Ajay Maken, prominent others who addressed the programme were AICC general-secretary and in-charge of Delhi Shri P.C.Chacko, ex-MP Shri Ramesh Kumar, Municipal Councillors Maya Devi, Usha Gupta, District Congress Committee presidents Mohammed Usman and Harikishan Jindal, and office-bearers of Jawla Brigade.
The programme was organized under the leadership of former president of the Delhi Pradesh Mahila Congress Smt. Abha Choudhary, who is also the president of the Jwala Brigade.
Shri Ajay Maken said that women are symbols of power and they are known for their power and strength. He said that after independence, the Congress party took the issue of women empowerment very seriously. At the time when Smt. Indira Gandhi became the Prime Minister of India, the Congress party honoured every woman of the country through this gesture.
Shri Maken said that former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi gave one-third representation to women in panchayats and Municipalities by passing a Bill in Parliament. He said the Congress party set the finest example in empowering women when the UPA Government was in power at the Centre. On the one hand, Smt. Sonia Gandhi was the chairperson of the UPA Government, while the Congress made Smt. Pratibha Patil as the first woman President of the country. Smt. Meera Kumar was appointed the first woman Speaker of Lok Sabha.
Shri Maken said women suffered the worst due to demonetization because in the Indian tradition, women make small savings to take care of a condigency situation in the family so that the family’s emergency financial needs could be met.
Shri Maken said that on the one hand, there is Congress party which has worked hard for women empowerment while on the other hand the AAP Government discontinued the “Awaaz Uthao” programme for women. The AAP Government also stopped the women helpline which was started to help women in need.
Shri P.C Chacko said that Kejriwal’s AAP Government and Modi’s Central Government lock horns on petty issues due to which the law and order situation in Delhi has become worst. He said that every day, we listen only about assaults and attacks on women, which is a sad commentary on the functioning of the Central and Delhi State Government. He said that Modi’s demonetization decision was nothing but a “Tuglaqi Farman” as he did not consult even a single economic expert before arriving at this crucial decision, whereas the BJP leaders had prior knowledge of demonetization.
Smt. Abha Choudhary said that Jwala Brigade (Eek Aag) is an NGO which is committed for the empowerment of women, and for raising the voice of women. While talking on demonetization, Smt. Abha Choudhary said Modi does not know how to run a household, as he did not taken into consideration the crushing effect demonetization would have on women, because women take care of household needs. She said women had to stand in long queues to take out their own money outside ATMs and Banks during demonetization, to run the household affairs.
