New Delhi, August 2, 2023: The world’s oldest man, Jose Paulino Gomes, from Brazil, passed away just seven days before his 128th birthday at his residence in Corrego del Cafe, Pedra Bonita, Minas Gerais state, on Friday, as reported by local media.

Born on 4th August 1895, Gomes’ birth certificate for the year 1917 indicates he had lived through three pandemics, both world wars, and even before the death of British Queen Victoria. If authenticated, he would have been the oldest known person in the world.

According to Willyan Jose Rodrigues de Souza, a legal adviser to a nearby registry office in Pedra Bonita, it is presumed that Gomes was born before 1900, considering men rarely married at the age of 17.

The centenarian, who worked as an animal tamer in the past, was known for his simple and humble nature. He preferred natural and countryside-based products, avoiding industrialized items. Gomes, a father of seven, had 25 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

The cause of his demise was attributed to multiple organ failure, likely due to his advanced age.

Despite the Guinness World Records currently holding the record for 115-year-old Maria Branyas Morera from Spain as the oldest person, Gomes’ age estimation is based on his marriage certificate. His granddaughter, Eliane Ferreira, explained that people in the countryside are usually registered when they are older, leading to cases of incorrect documentation. However, she believes that Gomes’ documentation showed he was younger than his actual age.

The world mourns the loss of Jose Paulino Gomes, whose life spanned an extraordinary era of history and witnessed remarkable changes.
