New Delhi News (11/09/2026): Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to visit India for the first time in seven years to participate in the upcoming BRICS Summit in New Delhi, marking a significant diplomatic engagement between the two countries amid efforts to strengthen bilateral communication and economic ties.
China on Thursday formally announced that Xi will travel to India from September 12 to 13 at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit is expected to draw considerable attention as it will provide the two leaders with an opportunity to discuss bilateral relations as well as wider regional and global developments.
According to diplomatic sources, Modi and Xi are scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting on Saturday evening. The talks are likely to focus on key areas of mutual interest and could provide an important platform for the two sides to assess the progress of their engagement.
Xi to Spend Around 24 Hours in India
Xi’s India visit is expected to be brief, with the Chinese president scheduled to spend approximately 24 hours in the country. He is expected to arrive in New Delhi at around 12.10 pm on Saturday and depart at approximately 12.20 pm on Sunday.
Following his arrival, Xi is scheduled to reach Bharat Mandapam at around 2 pm, where Prime Minister Modi will welcome him along with other participating leaders attending the BRICS Summit.
67-Member Chinese Government Delegation
The Chinese president will reportedly be accompanied by a 67-member government delegation, underlining the importance Beijing attaches to the visit.
The delegation is expected to include senior Chinese officials, among them Cai Qi, a prominent member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China’s Politburo and one of President Xi’s closest political aides.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is also expected to be part of the delegation. His presence could add significance to the diplomatic discussions, given his prominent role in China’s foreign policy and India-China engagement.
Separate Business Delegation to Accompany Visit
Apart from the official government delegation, a separate Chinese business delegation is also expected to travel to India in connection with Xi’s visit.
The participation of business representatives is likely to add an economic dimension to the high-level diplomatic engagement. Trade, investment and opportunities for greater commercial cooperation are expected to remain important areas of interest as India and China look at ways to expand economic engagement.
BRICS Summit Brings Major Leaders Together
Xi’s visit comes as New Delhi prepares to host the BRICS Summit, bringing together leaders from major emerging economies for discussions on international cooperation, economic growth, trade and other global issues.
The summit will also provide opportunities for participating countries to hold bilateral and multilateral meetings on the sidelines of the main Programme. With Xi’s return to India after a seven-year gap, his participation is expected to make the summit particularly significant from the perspective of India-China relations.
Security Tightened Ahead of Summit
The Chinese president’s visit comes amid extensive security preparations in the national capital. More than 500 CCTV cameras are reportedly being deployed as part of the security arrangements for the BRICS Summit. Authorities have also been preparing traffic and security measures to manage the movement of foreign leaders, official delegations and other participants during the summit.
Xi’s visit is therefore expected to combine high-level diplomatic engagement with discussions on bilateral relations, economic cooperation and broader international issues, making it one of the most closely watched foreign visits to India in recent years.
