Jyoti Gupta, whose husband, Dr Pankaj Gupta, and three-year-old daughter, Lineshya, were killed by a rashly driven bus outside their Gurgaon housing society in April, has launched an online petition seeking PM Narendra Modi’s intervention to amend road safety laws.

In an emotional letter describing how she witnessed her husband and daughter dragged along and crushed by the bus, Jyoti says the only law governing road safety in India, the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, is not effective. “We need a law that includes: i) protection for children, pedestrians and cyclists during commute, ii) increased enforcement, iii) mandatory road safety education, and iv) transparent and efficient process for getting a licence,” the letter states.
