#MCG, Huda told to build public toilets

Gurgaon: The Haryana government has decided to construct more public toilets in all urban centres of the state in the next six months. The aim is to stop people from urinating in public in urban areas.

According to sources, Vikas Gupta, director, urban local bodies, has written to all municipal corporations including MCG and Huda to construct toilets in markets, parks, government buildings and in PSU buildings in six months.

“It has come to notice that people are using open spaces for urination due to non-availability of urinals in proper places. The chief minister wants to make all urban areas free from open urination by October 31. For this, more toilets should be constructed in public places,” wrote the director

The plan, however, seems to be too ambitious for the government to achieve. Even in a city like Gurgaon, one of the most developed urban areas of Haryana, there are just 30 public toilets for a population of 15 lakh. Out of them, more than a dozen are not functional while the remaining are in bad shape.

Gupta has also directed civic bodies to submit a progress report on 7th of every month with details of existing toilets, places identified for construction of new ones and the number of places where the construction work is in progress.

According to MCG officials, they have identified 133 places for construction of public toilets. Fiftyeight of them will be constructed in public parks and the remaining will be built in public areas.
