Delhi Metro Employee Arrested for Selling Fraudulent Metro Cards, Duped DMRC of 2.5 Lakh

New Delhi: The city police have arrested three persons, including a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) employee, for fraudulently recharging 152 metro smart cards on Wednesday.

The accused are identified as Rajesh Maurya, who worked with the DMRC, Ajay Kumar and Anil Kumar, both were contractual employees. Rajesh was posted at Ghitorni metro station, where he used to assist passengers in recharging their metro cards and worked with the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) maintenance department.

A recharge amount of around Rs 2.5 lakh were transferred on these cards, police said. The police said that they were alerted about the fraud by the DMRC’s AFC unit, which found that transaction details of over 150 metro smart cards, which were recharged, was not showing in the central system.

The AFC unit initiated an inquiry into the matter and found that transaction details of around 152 metro smart cards, recharged between January 1 and May 26, were not showing in the central system.

Fraud cards tracked

The police said four smart cards out of 152 were tracked and blacklisted in order to identify the users. Moreover, police arrested two people who were using the cards from Malviya Nagar Metro Station. They were identified as Anil and Ajay.

Upon interrogation, duo admitted that they purchased the metro cards from Rajesh by paying half value, police said. A case has been registered against all for fraudely recharging and buying metro cards.

Modus operandi

-The accused would purchase a metro smart card worth Rs 150.

– Disconnecting the system from the network ensured the transactions did not reflect on the central system.

-The fraud went undetected for nearly 6 months

– While recharging it for Rs 1,000, he would disconnect his system from the network and delete transactions details from the computer.
