New Delhi: The much-awaited Moon mission, Chandrayaan 2, has finally launched and is currently en-route to the Moon’s surface where it’s expected to reach later in the early hours of September 7.
Chandrayaan 2 mission comes over a decade after the launch of the Chandrayaan 1 mission which sent back important data about the existence of water molecules on the moon. Now with the second mission, there is an expectation that more revelations will be made about the Moon.
Understandably, social media has been abuzz with chatter of the moon mission. Here’s how celebrities, politicians and Twitterati, in general, has reacted to the launch of the mission.
In a series of tweet immediately after the launch Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted S”pecial moments that will be etched in the annals of our glorious history! President of India tweeted “The historic launch of #Chandrayaan2 from Sriharikota is a proud moment for all Indians. Congratulations to our scientists and engineers for furthering India’s indigenous space programme. May @ISRO continue to master new technologies, and continue to conquer new frontiers”
Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted “I congratulate our scientists at @isro for the successful launch of #Chandrayaan2 and setting yet another benchmark in the field of space technology. A grateful nation is proud of them.
I also thank PM Modi ji for encouraging our institutions for setting new standards everytime.”
While the ISRO on its official twitter handle did the live projection of the launch detailing all the information of the mission.
Former Union Minister and MP from Gautam Buddh Nagar Dr Mahesh Sharma tweeted “My special thanks to the team of extraordinarily talented women scientists for giving this great leap to our country as India will now become the 4th country in the world to soft-land a spacecraft on the lunar surface.”

Union Minister Piyush Goyal tweeted “Many congratulations to @ISRO and its women led team that made the ambitious moon mission #Chandrayaan2 launch a reality, bringing India closer to become the fourth country in the world to soft-land a spacecraft on the lunar surface.”

This is the second time in 10 years that India is planning to send a lunar mission into space. Chandrayaan 2 comes 10 years after ISRO launched Chandrayaan 1 in 2009. Although, unlike Chandrayan 2, the first mission didn’t include a rover. Chandrayaan 1 was sent to the moon only equipped with an orbiter and an ‘impactor’ that crashed into the Moon’s surface near the South Pole.
