Plasma treatment affected at GIMS as potential plasma donors get complacent
Greater Noida, 14th April: Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), the lone hospital in the Gautam Buddh Nagar district offering plasma treatment is reportedly running out of blood plasma, mainly due to the rising number of Covid cases and also due to shortage of plasma.
Currently, there are 40 patients at the GIMS requiring plasma, however only 11 units of the same is available at the hospital.
Last year, the GIMS treated 606 Covid patients through plasma therapy, the plasma for which was collected from 400 donors.
Speaking to a media outlet, Dr Shivani Kalhan, professor and head, department of pathology at GIMS complained about recovered Covid patients not showing up to donate their plasma despite all the efforts by the hospital. She said, “We are not getting donors. Requests are coming from other hospitals as well for plasma. Earlier our technicians would call the Covid recovered patients through our internal database to come and donate their blood plasma. But nowadays, senior doctors are making the calls and yet we are not getting any donors.”
The potential plasma donors make excuses when called to request donation, lamented Dr. Kalhan.
