Delhi LG VK Saxena gives nod to prosecute 82 jail employees in Sukesh Chandrashekhar fraud case

New Delhi, 20 October 2022: Delhi LG VK Saxena has given a go-ahead to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Delhi Police to prosecute 82 personnel of Delhi jail for their alleged participation in an organized crime ring that con artist Sukesh Chandrashekhar was running from behind bars.

Approximately, eight officers have been detained till date.

Chandrashekhar was allegedly paying Rs 1.5 crore each month for mobile phones and a separate barrack, according to the police. He is currently being held in Mandawali Jail.

In accordance with the Prevention of Corruption Act, an FIR was previously filed against 82 officers and staff members who were allegedly responsible for giving Chandrashekhar various forms of comfort in the jails in Tihar and Rohini. Data taken from assistant jail superintendent Dharam Singh Meena’s cell phone was used to support the claims made against this personnel.

The FIR stated, we found a handwritten document containing the names of the Rohini jail personnel and the amount of bribe paid to each of them. Meena disclosed that jail employees demanded bribes in exchange for the money Sukesh had extorted.

During the course of the inquiry, EOW gathered CCTV footage from 10 cameras at Rohini jail between July 14 and August 14, 2021, and also examined the staff members’ phone numbers and duty schedules where Chandrashekhar was staying, in ward number 3 and barrack number 204, was covered by cameras. Curtains and mineral water bottle boxes totally covered the cameras in his barrack, as per the FIR.
