Mumbai, 22nd June 2023: The Central Government has requested Maharashtra’s permission to pass over ownership of Dr B R Ambedkar’s London residence to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
According to a Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) official, the paperwork has been submitted for approval.
The state government purchased the three-story home on King Henry’s Road in north London for 3.1 million pounds 2015 to turn it into a museum. The mansion was indeed transformed into a museum and opened to the public in 2020.
In 1921-22, Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, stayed in residence, and in 2014, an estate agent listed the 2,050-square-foot residential house in London for sale.
The Federation of Ambedkarites and Buddhist Organisations (FABO) in the UK had urged the Indian government to purchase it as a historically significant monument.
The Narendra Modi-led government eventually approved Maharashtra’s plan to acquire the mansion.
