Galgotias University’s Disability Rights Clinic Celebrates World Disability Day and 2nd Anniversary

Greater Noida, December 3, 2024 – Galgotias University commemorated World Disability Day and the second anniversary of its Disability Rights Clinic (DRC) with a special event. This year’s theme, “Family Inclusion,” emphasized the importance of inclusive efforts by families and society in upholding the rights of individuals with disabilities.

The event began with a welcome address by Dr. Smita Nizar, the founder and head of the Disability Rights Clinic. She highlighted the importance of this occasion, emphasizing the need to ensure acceptance and equality for persons with disabilities in society.

The DRC student team performed a compelling street play titled Parvarish (Nurturing). The play aimed to raise awareness about inclusive parenting and the challenges that isolate individuals with disabilities from society. It struck an emotional chord with the audience and emphasized the value of family acceptance.

The event featured keynote addresses by disability rights activist Nilesh Singit and Delhi University professor Dr. Jagdish Chander.

Nilesh Singit spoke on “Inclusive Families and Equal Rights: Legal Capacity and Autonomy for Persons with Disabilities,” sharing personal experiences to illustrate how families and society can foster an inclusive environment.

Dr. Jagdish Chander delved into the topic, “The Right to Family: A Legal Entitlement or Personal Choice?” highlighting the familial and social challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.

During the event, the DRC’s annual report and upcoming plans were unveiled. Key accomplishments, such as the “Invisible Disability Awareness Week” and initiatives focusing on “Gender Justice: A Twin-Track Disability Rights Perspective,” were highlighted in the report.

Participants praised the DRC’s efforts, acknowledging the positive changes in their perspectives through association with the clinic.

The program saw participation from law students, faculty members, students from Grads International School with disabilities, and representatives from various organizations. All pledged to promote inclusivity for individuals with disabilities and their families.

On this occasion, Dr. Dhruv Galgotia, CEO of Galgotias University, remarked, “This initiative by Galgotias University is proving to be a milestone in empowering the rights of persons with disabilities and laying the foundation for an inclusive society.”
