Rising Kidney and Heart Issues in India: Insights from Dr. Manish Mahajan, Senior Consultant Nephrologist at Kailash Hospital

TEN NEWS NETWORK

GREATER NOIDA News (14/07/2025): In an exclusive interview with Ten News Network, Dr. Manish Mahajan, Senior Consultant Nephrologist at Kailash Group of Hospitals, shed light on the alarming increase in kidney and cardiac problems, especially among young adults in India. While his expertise lies primarily in nephrology, Dr. Mahajan emphasized the interconnectedness of kidney health with overall lifestyle, including the rising incidence of heart attacks among younger populations.

Understanding Kidney Damage: The Silent Threat of Diabetes, Hypertension, and Lifestyle

Dr. Mahajan began by categorizing kidney problems into three main groups:

Non-diabetic, Non-hypertensive Patients:
In this group, lifestyle choices play a critical role. Dr. Mahajan warned against the widespread use of unregulated traditional or “desi” medications prescribed by unqualified practitioners such as local Ayurvedic or Unani healers. Many patients from tier-3 cities visit these quacks to save consultation fees, he explained. Unfortunately, these homemade or herbal remedies, especially when abused, can cause serious kidney damage.

Additionally, Dr. Mahajan highlighted the rising consumption of junk and packaged foods as a major contributor to kidney and metabolic issues. Busy lifestyles have led people away from home-cooked meals, increasing the risk of kidney and diabetic problems.

Diabetic Patients Without Hypertension:
Dr. Mahajan pointed out that about 67% of diabetic patients in India are not adequately controlled despite medication, leading to long-term kidney and cardiac complications. Poorly managed diabetes remains a significant cause of kidney failure and heart disease, he said.

Hypertensive Patients Without Diabetes:
According to Dr. Mahajan, over 80% of Indian adults above 55 years develop hypertension, often asymptomatic, which silently damages the kidneys and heart. Notably, about 8% of hypertensive patients fail to control their blood pressure despite treatment. High salt intake, stress, and sedentary habits fuel this epidemic, he noted.

Dr. Mahajan stressed that many patients suffer from both diabetes and hypertension concurrently, further increasing their risk for renal and cardiac diseases. Moreover, obesity, classified globally as a chronic adipose-based disease, significantly exacerbates these health problems. Regular exercise, yoga, and weight control are essential to combat this growing issue, he added.

Lifestyle Advice to Protect Kidney Health

Addressing individuals with a family history of kidney disease, Dr. Mahajan emphasized the importance of early lifestyle interventions. Genetics predispose certain people to diabetes and hypertension, but strict diet control — especially low salt intake and diabetic-friendly meals — combined with regular exercise and stress management can delay or prevent disease onset.
He also underscored the importance of avoiding packaged and processed foods and encouraged practicing yoga and meditation to manage stress, which is a significant contributor to lifestyle diseases.

The Surge in Heart Attacks Among Young Adults: Causes and Prevention

Dr. Mahajan identified lifestyle changes and dietary habits as the main drivers behind the increase in heart attacks among India’s youth. Children today are introduced early to junk foods like pizza and packaged snacks, often comprising 40% of their daily intake, which severely impacts their heart health. Obesity and stress are other major culprits. He cautioned against the unregulated use of supplements and protein powders in gym-goers, which can also adversely affect cardiac health. A healthy lifestyle rooted in natural, home-cooked food, along with physical activity and stress reduction, remains the best prevention.

When Should Healthy Individuals Get Screened for Kidney and Heart Health?

For seemingly healthy people, especially those with stressful or sedentary lives, Dr. Mahajan advises regular health monitoring. Leading an inactive lifestyle is not truly healthy. Adults should aim for at least 10,000 to 15,000 steps daily to maintain physical fitness. He also recommended a balanced diet rich in vegetables and protein tailored to individual BMI. Regular check-ups and dietary adjustments based on body weight and health status are crucial for early detection and prevention of kidney and heart diseases.

Dr. Manish Mahajan’s insights emphasize the urgent need for awareness and lifestyle reforms to curb the rising tide of kidney and cardiac ailments in India. His expert advice points toward simple yet effective measures: avoid unregulated medicines, eat healthily, stay physically active, and manage stress. Early intervention and consistent care could significantly reduce the burden of these chronic diseases across all age groups, especially the youth.
