Delhi/NCR, 08th August 2025 – In a symbolic expression of unity, faith and resilience, the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) organized a Pooja Anushthan (ritual prayer ceremony) at its headquarters in New Delhi, seeking divine blessings to help the Indian handicrafts sector overcome the formidable challenges arising from the reciprocal tariffs imposed by the United States.

The ceremonial offering attended by senior council officials, staff and more than 300 members of the handicrafts community, reflects EPCH’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of millions of handicraft exporters and artisans during this turbulent period. The prayer gathering was both a gesture of spiritual solidarity and a reminder of the enduring strength of India’s cultural and craft heritage.

Speaking on the occasion Dr. Neeraj Khanna, Chairman, EPCH, said that “the 50% tariff imposed by the U.S. marks a critical juncture for India’s handicraft exporters. With the U.S. being our largest market accounting for USD 1.57 billion and nearly 40% of our total global exports, this sharp increase places immense strain on our MSMEs. He further added “While we continue to take strategic and diplomatic steps at all levels, today’s Pooja was a way of reaffirming our belief in collective spirit and divine strength. The handicrafts sector has weathered many storms before and with the blessings of the Almighty, we will emerge stronger once again.”

Echoing the sentiments, Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Director General in the role of Chief Mentor, EPCH, and Chairman – IEML shared that “At a time of global uncertainty and shifting trade dynamics, it is imperative that urgent support measures are rolled out to protect India’s handicrafts sector. Yet, beyond economic resilience, we must also draw strength from our cultural and spiritual roots. Dr. Kumar further said “The Pooja Anushthan held today was more than a ceremonial act, it was a moment of unity, reflection and resolve. We shall remain hopeful that with timely government intervention and community solidarity, the sector will emerge stronger.”

Avdesh Agarwal, Chief Convener, EPCH said that “This Pooja Anushthan was not only a spiritual gesture, but also an expression of unity and unwavering belief in our strengths. Our artisans and exporters have weathered many storms before and we are confident that with timely support, they will overcome this one too.”

R. K. Verma, Executive Director, EPCH said that “The tariff hike is a serious challenge, but also a turning point. We have urged the government to introduce an Emergency Relief Fund, reintroduce MEIS with enhanced rates, improve RoDTEP rates and duty drawback benefits, and offer freight subsidies. We’re also seeking 10% cost equalisation exports to USA, restoration of 80HHC in Income tax act; a two-year loan moratorium and fast-tracked trade dialogue with the U.S. to secure tariff relief. Simultaneously, EPCH is also working on market diversification, product innovation and long-term competitiveness for the handicrafts sector.”
