Greater Noida (25 September 2025): The Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), Greater Noida, a 630-bedded autonomous tertiary care institute, celebrated World Pharmacist Day with great enthusiasm. This year’s theme was “Think Health, Think Pharmacist,” under which pharmacists working on the frontlines were felicitated for their patience, dedication, and service to patients.
The program was chaired by Dr. Saurabh Srivastava, CMS GIMS and Chairman HRF-GIMS, who lauded the pharmacists for their ability to deal with difficult patients, skill in deciphering doctors’ handwriting, and their tireless commitment even while working extended hours. He highlighted that pharmacists, with their constant smiles and resilience, play a vital role in healthcare delivery. Also present on the occasion were Dr. Shivani Kalhan, Faculty In-charge HRF-GIMS, along with other committee members.
A Unique Model – Hospital Revolving Fund (HRF)
One of GIMS’ unique initiatives is the Hospital Revolving Fund (HRF), which functions round-the-clock on a self-sustainable model. This system, introduced under the leadership of Dr. (Brig.) Rakesh Gupta, was adopted from SGPGIMS Lucknow. Today, it has flourished as a backbone of the hospital, ensuring continuous availability of quality medicines and consumables at affordable prices for all patients.
Dr. Pallavi Mehra, Purchase Officer HRF-GIMS, shared that as per studies, this initiative has reduced out-of-pocket expenditure of patients by nearly 55% in the domain of drugs and consumables. Moreover, patients are benefitting from 30–60% discounts on branded medicines and items.
Direct Procurement Ensuring Affordability and Quality
Explaining further, Dr. Mehra said HRF procures medicines and consumables directly from manufacturers, thereby eliminating retailer margins. This not only ensures better quality but also makes treatment cost-effective. The entire inventory management and billing system is operated in real time through the Hospital Information System (HIS), guaranteeing seamless availability and transparency.
A Patient-Friendly Approach
The HRF model has emerged as a major relief for patients and their families, especially those with limited resources. By providing essential medicines at reduced costs, it ensures accessibility to affordable, reliable, and high-quality healthcare.
The celebration of World Pharmacist Day at GIMS not only highlighted the indispensable role of pharmacists in healthcare delivery but also underscored their contribution in making treatment more humane, patient-centric, and affordable. Their patience, skill, and compassion remain at the heart of the hospital’s service to society.
