Greater Noida (07 October 2025): The Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), Greater Noida, successfully hosted the North Zone Workshop under the Multidisciplinary Research Unit (MRU) program funded by the Department of Health Research (DHR), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Held from October 6–7, the two-day workshop brought together medical researchers and faculty from leading institutions across northern India to enhance research skills and promote interdisciplinary collaboration.

Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Secretary, Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, addressed the participants virtually. Commending GIMS for organizing the event, he highlighted the importance of capacity building among medical educators and researchers. High-quality, evidence-based research is essential for achieving meaningful public health outcomes, he noted, adding that ICMR-supported initiatives like this workshop play a pivotal role in strengthening the nation’s research ecosystem.

The workshop was spearheaded by Dr. Piyush Gupta, Editor-in-Chief of the Indian Journal of Medical Research (IJMR) and senior faculty at ICMR, who served as the lead trainer. The sessions emphasized data interpretation, manuscript writing, and best practices in publishing scientific work. Six senior scientists from ICMR Headquarters participated as observers, offering expert insights and technical guidance throughout the event.

A total of 35 delegates attended, representing institutions such as SN Medical College (Agra), Government Medical College (Karnal), ESI Medical College (Faridabad), ICMR-Jalma (Agra), and the National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research (NICPR), Noida, alongside faculty from GIMS Greater Noida.

In his welcome address, the Director of GIMS highlighted the institute’s rapid growth in research and clinical excellence. He shared that GIMS currently leads 25 extramural research projects funded by ICMR, DHR, and other national bodies, in addition to more than 150 intramural studies. The institute’s Scientific Review Committee ensures ethical compliance and research quality across all initiatives. Notably, nine ICMR Short-Term Studentship (STS) projects from GIMS received approval this year—reflecting the institute’s rising research momentum.

The MRU at GIMS serves as a cornerstone for translational and multidisciplinary research, fostering innovation across diverse medical fields. Under the leadership of Dr. Rajiv Bahl, the institute has established a dedicated Department of Medical Research that houses the MRU, the Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL), and one of Uttar Pradesh’s few Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) facilities within a government medical institution.

Looking ahead, the Director revealed that GIMS aims to expand its translational research focus on region-specific health challenges such as gallstones, renal stones, and gall bladder cancer. Additionally, the institute plans to launch One Health-based projects addressing zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and environmental health issues impacting the local population.

In his closing remarks, the Director reiterated GIMS’s commitment to nurturing a vibrant research ecosystem and maximizing the outcomes of the North Zone Workshop. He extended heartfelt gratitude to ICMR, DHR, and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for their continuous support and partnership in advancing medical science and innovation in India.
