Greater Noida News (12/02/2026): Greater Noida Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) has achieved a significant milestone in the field of biomedical research with the official registration of its Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBSC) by the RCGM Secretariat under the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. The approval, granted today, authorizes the institute to formally initiate all in-vitro research activities in its cell culture laboratory.
The registration of the IBSC marks a crucial regulatory step, ensuring that all research involving biological materials at GIMS adheres to national biosafety guidelines, ethical standards, and statutory compliance. With this clearance, the institute is now fully equipped to undertake advanced cell culture–based experiments essential for modern medical research.
Recently, GIMS has also set up a cutting-edge BSL-2+ Cell Culture Facility at a cost of ₹65 lakh. The facility has been designed to support high-quality biomedical and translational research, providing a safe and controlled environment for studies related to disease mechanisms, drug testing, vaccine research, and diagnostic development. This infrastructure places GIMS among a select group of institutions with enhanced biosafety laboratory capabilities.
Cell culture research plays a pivotal role in understanding complex diseases and evaluating new therapeutic approaches before clinical application. The presence of an IBSC ensures that such projects are conducted responsibly, with strict oversight on biosafety protocols and ethical research practices.
Reacting to the development, GIMS Director Dr. Brigadier Rakesh Gupta described the approval as a transformative moment for the institute. He stated that the formal registration of the IBSC, coupled with the establishment of the BSL-2+ facility, would significantly strengthen GIMS’ research framework and empower its scientists to make meaningful contributions to national health and scientific priorities. He reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to fostering safe, ethical, and high-impact research.
The IBSC registration represents an important step forward in GIMS’ long-term vision of becoming a center of excellence in scientific innovation, biomedical research, and public health advancement.
