Educational Empowerment of Agniveers: NIOS Organises National Workshop

Greater Noida News (29/05/2026): The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, successfully organised a two-day workshop aimed at enhancing educational opportunities for Agniveers serving in the Indian Armed Forces under the Agnipath Scheme. The programme was conducted at Kalyan Singh Bhawan, NIOS Delhi Regional Centre, Sector-62, Noida, and brought together representatives from 45 Regimental Centres of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force from across the country.
The workshop began with Saraswati Vandana and the ceremonial lighting of the lamp in the presence of senior officials from NIOS and the Armed Forces. Among the dignitaries present during the inaugural session were Prof. Akhilesh Mishra, Chairperson of National Institute of Open Schooling; Major General (Dr) Tamojit Biswas, Additional Director General of Army Education; Dr. Rajiv Kumar Singh, Director (Academic), NIOS; and Dr. T.N. Giri, Director (Vocational Education), NIOS.
Welcoming the participants, Prof. Akhilesh Mishra described the Agnipath Scheme as a transformative initiative designed not only to recruit youth into the Armed Forces but also to prepare them for future leadership and national development. He said the integration of education with military service would help Agniveers develop academically, professionally and personally. He also noted that the partnership between NIOS and the Armed Forces reflects a collective commitment towards education, skill enhancement and nation-building.

Speaking as the Chief Guest, Major General (Dr) Tamojit Biswas emphasized that the Agnipath Scheme contributes to the overall development of young soldiers by strengthening them physically, mentally and academically. He highlighted the importance of education in shaping personality and character and stated that educational advancement remains a lifelong asset. He further reiterated the commitment of the Government of India and the Armed Forces to ensure that Agniveers receive sufficient opportunities to continue their studies and improve their qualifications during their tenure of service.
The event also highlighted the ongoing collaboration between NIOS and the Indian Armed Forces under the Memorandum of Understanding signed on January 3, 2023. Under this agreement, several Regimental Centres have been accredited as NIOS Study Centres to support Agniveers in pursuing Secondary and Senior Secondary education. According to NIOS officials, nearly 14,000 Agniveers have already enrolled in various academic programmes, demonstrating the growing success of the initiative.
Throughout the two-day workshop, participants attended multiple technical and training sessions focusing on educational upgradation, admission procedures, learner support systems, credit transfer mechanisms, vocational education, skill development and digital academic services. Discussions were also held on APAAR ID, DigiLocker integration, Academic Bank of Credits and efficient data management systems. In addition, practical training sessions were conducted on NIOS digital platforms and operational processes.

Dr. Rajiv Kumar Singh, Director (Academic), delivered the vote of thanks and reaffirmed NIOS’s commitment to making quality education accessible to all learners. He expressed gratitude to the Armed Forces personnel, NIOS officials and members of the media for their active participation and support.
During the valedictory session, participants shared positive feedback about the workshop. Col. Shakeel Ahmed, Secretary, NIOS, said that the educational partnership between NIOS and the Armed Forces would continue to expand and create greater opportunities for Agniveers in the future. Lt. Col. Abhilash Singh Sengar, representing the Indian Army, also praised the initiative, calling it practical, effective and result-oriented.
NIOS expressed confidence that the initiative will further strengthen access to education and skill development for Agniveers, helping them earn recognised academic qualifications and contribute more effectively to national progress and development.
