Greater Noida News (01/07/2026): The Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), Greater Noida, became the focal point of India’s medical technology sector as it hosted the CDSCO–CII National Workshop on Medical Device Regulations, bringing together policymakers, regulators, industry leaders, researchers, healthcare professionals, startups, and investors to deliberate on the future of India’s rapidly expanding medical device ecosystem.
Organized jointly by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), Government of India, with GIMS serving as the host institution, the workshop focused on strengthening regulatory frameworks, accelerating innovation, promoting industry-academia collaboration, and enhancing India’s global competitiveness in medical device manufacturing.
A major highlight of the event was the inauguration of the Clinical Trial Facility at GIMS by Dr. Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi, Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI). The new facility is expected to significantly enhance the institute’s clinical research capabilities and support the development and evaluation of innovative healthcare technologies.
During his address, Dr. Raghuvanshi praised GIMS for its remarkable progress in medical research, innovation, and startup incubation. Interacting with entrepreneurs during the Hospital Demo Day, he commended the quality of healthcare innovations being developed and emphasized that clinician-led innovation and robust startup ecosystems are essential for positioning India as a global leader in healthcare technology.

The workshop also featured a keynote presentation by Shailendra Kumar Bhatia, IAS, Chief Executive Officer of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), who outlined the vision for the upcoming Medical Device Park in the Yamuna Expressway region. He highlighted the project’s strategic advantages, including its proximity to the upcoming Jewar International Airport, world-class expressway connectivity, and integrated logistics infrastructure. He noted that both the Government of Uttar Pradesh and the Government of India are committed to transforming the region into an international hub for medical device manufacturing, innovation, exports, and investment.
The national event witnessed participation from senior government officials, regulators, industry representatives, academia, and healthcare institutions. Prominent attendees included Ashim Sahu (CDSCO), Rajeev Chhibber, Dr. Ravi Rathor, and Praveen Mittal, Managing Director of the Export Promotion Council for Medical Devices (EPCMD), along with representatives from CII, CDSCO, EPCMD, YEIDA, hospitals, and leading medical device companies.
Welcoming the delegates, Dr. (Brig.) Rakesh Kumar Gupta, Director, GIMS, said the institute has evolved into a comprehensive healthcare ecosystem where patient care, clinical excellence, research, and innovation complement each other. He highlighted GIMS’ advanced medical infrastructure and the Centre for Medical Innovation (CMI)—Uttar Pradesh’s first government hospital-based medical incubation centre—which currently supports more than 50 healthcare startups. He reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to facilitating clinical validation, regulatory preparedness, technology commercialization, and industry partnerships for emerging healthcare innovations.
The inauguration of the Clinical Trial Facility further strengthens GIMS’ growing research ecosystem. The institute already houses several state-of-the-art research facilities, including an ICMR Intent Centre, Genome Sequencing Facility, Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL), Biosafety Level-2 (BSL-2) and Biosafety Level-3 (BSL-3) laboratories, a Negative Pressure Laboratory, along with multiple nationally funded research programmes.

Another key attraction of the workshop was the Hospital Demo Day, where 15 carefully selected healthcare startups from the GIMS incubation programme presented their cutting-edge innovations before regulators, clinicians, investors, industry experts, and academic leaders. The platform enabled startups to receive regulatory guidance, explore clinical validation opportunities, establish strategic collaborations, and engage with potential investors, further reinforcing GIMS’ growing reputation as a leading centre for healthcare innovation and medical technology development in India.
The workshop concluded with a strong emphasis on fostering regulatory excellence, encouraging indigenous innovation, strengthening public-private collaboration, and accelerating India’s journey toward becoming a global powerhouse in the medical devices sector.
