National News (22/08/2026): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of ₹2.70 lakh on Progfin Private Limited for failing to comply with certain provisions of the central bank’s Know Your Customer (KYC) Directions.

According to the RBI, the penalty was imposed through an order dated August 19, 2026, under the powers vested with it by Section 58(G)(1)(b) read with Section 58(B)(5)(aa) of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.

RBI inspection identified regulatory lapses

The action follows a statutory inspection of Progfin Private Limited conducted by the RBI with reference to the company’s financial position as of March 31, 2025.

During the supervisory examination, the central bank identified certain instances of non-compliance with applicable regulatory directions. Following the inspection and subsequent correspondence with the company, the RBI issued a notice asking Progfin Private Limited to explain why a monetary penalty should not be imposed for the reported violations.

The company submitted its response to the notice and also presented its case during a personal hearing before the RBI.

Failure to review account risk classification

After examining the company’s written response and submissions made during the hearing, the RBI concluded that the regulatory charge against Progfin Private Limited was established.

The central bank specifically found that the company had not established a system for periodic review of the risk categorisation of customer accounts at least once every six months, as required under the applicable KYC Directions.

The failure to maintain the prescribed periodic review mechanism constituted a regulatory compliance lapse and resulted in the imposition of the ₹2.70 lakh penalty.
