National News (30 August 2026): Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan attended the 115th anniversary celebrations of Kerala Kaumudi in Alappuzha on Sunday and described the newspaper’s more than a century-long journey as a reflection of public trust, courage and the lasting influence of ideas.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice President highlighted the significant role played by Kerala Kaumudi in creating social awareness and giving voice to marginalised and disadvantaged sections of society. He said the newspaper, founded in 1911 by C. V. Kunhiraman, has established a strong legacy in Malayalam journalism through its long-standing engagement with social issues.
Radhakrishnan said the media landscape has undergone a major transformation, moving from traditional print journalism to television, digital platforms, social media and now artificial intelligence. However, he stressed that technological changes should not come at the cost of journalistic ethics, accuracy and credibility.
According to the Vice President, public trust remains the most valuable asset of any newspaper. He said such trust can only be built and sustained through accurate reporting, fairness, editorial independence and accountability.
Calling for constructive and responsible journalism, Radhakrishnan urged media organisations to go beyond merely reporting problems and also highlight innovation, scientific achievements, compassion, community initiatives and positive social change. Such journalism, he said, can educate citizens, inspire communities and contribute to nation-building.

The Vice President also underlined the importance of maintaining a balanced perspective on development and environmental protection. He said genuine environmental and developmental concerns should be addressed through practical and sustainable solutions instead of turning every issue into a political controversy or opposing development as a matter of principle.
Referring to the health of rivers, Radhakrishnan stressed the need for timely and appropriate measures to maintain their depth and ecological condition. He emphasised that development and environmental concerns must be approached with a sense of responsibility and long-term vision.
Reflecting on Kerala’s rich intellectual and social heritage, the Vice President highlighted the contributions of Adi Shankaracharya, Sree Narayana Guru and Mannathu Padmanabhan. He said Adi Shankaracharya’s message emphasised unity, while Sree Narayana Guru championed equality and Mannathu Padmanabhan made significant contributions to education.
Radhakrishnan also congratulated the people of Keralam on the recent change in the name of the state. Recalling his role as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha when the Bill was passed on August 12, 2026, he said the sense of happiness among Members of Parliament reflected a feeling that a historical correction had been made.

The Vice President expressed confidence that Kerala Kaumudi would continue to uphold truth, credibility and public trust while strengthening its position as an influential voice of Malayalam journalism in the years ahead.
During the event, Radhakrishnan also presented the Kerala Kaumudi Excellence Awards to the recipients.
The anniversary celebrations were attended by Governor of Keralam Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Kerala Minister for Higher Education Roji M. John, Alappuzha MLA A. D. Thomas, Chathannoor MLA B. B. Gopakumar, Kerala Kaumudi Chief Editor Deepu Ravi, General Secretary of Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam Vellappally Natesan and several other dignitaries.
The 115th anniversary celebration marked a significant milestone for Kerala Kaumudi, reaffirming its longstanding contribution to Malayalam journalism and its role in shaping public discourse and social awareness.
