GIMS Greater Noida Organises Cancer Screening Camp in Latifpur, 54 Patients Screened

Greater Noida News (23/09/2026): Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), Greater Noida, organised a cancer screening and health awareness camp at Latifpur on September 22, 2026, with the objective of promoting early detection, timely medical evaluation and greater public awareness about cancer prevention.

The camp focused on screening and awareness related to four major types of cancer — oral, lung, breast and cervical cancer. Alongside clinical screening, participants were provided information about early warning signs, common risk factors, preventive measures and the importance of seeking medical advice without delay when suspicious symptoms are noticed.

According to the information shared by GIMS, around 54 patients underwent screening during the camp. As part of the screening activities, six PAP smears were conducted and approximately 21 participants underwent blood investigations. The medical team identified one oral premalignant condition, while six patients were found to have findings that warranted suspicion for cancer and further evaluation.

A dedicated health education session was also conducted to help participants understand the importance of preventive healthcare. Dr. Amit Kumar, Medical Officer and Camp In-charge, along with Dr. Farhana from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, interacted with participants and shared information on cancer-related symptoms and preventive practices.

The awareness programme particularly highlighted the significance of oral health, the risks associated with tobacco consumption, breast self-awareness and cervical cancer prevention. Participants were also educated about symptoms that may indicate lung-related health concerns and were encouraged to undergo appropriate screening as recommended by healthcare professionals.

The programme received support from the GBU campus team, including Prof. (Dr.) Lalita Mehra, PM Unit, NSS, and Dr. Bhaswati Banerjee, PO Unit, NSS. The camp was supported by four nursing staff members, two patient trackers and around 45 volunteers, who assisted in the screening, registration, awareness and patient-support activities.

The initiative was conducted under the guidance of Brigadier Dr. Rakesh Kumar Gupta, Director, GIMS Hospital. The programme was also supported by Dr. Hukam Singh, Professor and Head, Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head of the Cancer Screening Unit; Dr. Anirudh Saxena, Assistant Professor, Community Medicine; Dr. Suprakash Mandal, Assistant Professor, Community Medicine; and Dr. Shruti Pandey, Associate Professor, Department of General Surgery.

The medical team emphasised that cancer screening and awareness programmes can play an important role in encouraging people to recognise potentially concerning symptoms at an early stage. Participants were advised to maintain healthy lifestyle practices, remain alert to changes in their health and seek appropriate medical consultation whenever required.

The camp also provided an opportunity for individuals to understand the value of regular health checks and preventive care. Those requiring further evaluation were advised regarding appropriate follow-up and consultation. Through such outreach initiatives, GIMS continues to focus on taking preventive healthcare services and health awareness beyond the hospital setting and closer to the community.
