Delhi, September 1, 2022: AICC on Wednesday rejected a section of party leaders’ demand that the electoral rolls for the Congress presidential polls be made public.
The All India Congress Committee(AICC) reasoned that any member of the party can get a copy of the electoral polls from the Congress offices in their city and hence there was no need to make the polls public.
G23 leader Anand Sharma raised the issue on Sunday during the CWC meeting, with Manish Tewari and other members supporting him.
They cited that polls should be made public to ensure “fair and unbiased procedure”.
Senior leaders Shashi Tharoor and Karti Chidambaram voted for the same.
“This is an in-house procedure and it is not supposed to be published for all the public to see”, said AICC General Secretary, K C Venugopal.
Venugopal further added that such a procedure has never existed in the party’s history and that the old practice will be continued to follow.
His statement comes as voices seeking fairness in the upcoming polls to elect the new Congress president grew louder on Wednesday, with party leaders Manish Tewari, Shashi Tharoor, and Karti Chidambaram demanding that electoral rolls be made public to ensure transparency in the process.
