New Delhi, 2022: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra escalated her attack on the BJP on Tuesday, citing National Crime Records Bureau data to highlight the rise in suicides among daily wage labourers.

The NCRB – government unit which is in charge of keeping track of crime-related data – has released its most recent report, revealing figures that should worry the country.

India saw a record increase in suicides in 2021, with 120 fatalities per million people. This was 6.1% higher than the previous year. Many households across income levels have faced economic turmoil in the last two years.

One of the most concerning aspects of the data is that the greatest increase in suicidal fatalities occurred among self-employed and daily wage earners. Suicide deaths among agricultural labourers surged in the farming industry, a tendency that was also noted in 2020.

In a tweet in response to the findings, Mahua Moitra stated, “NCRB data shows daily wage earners account for 25.6% of all suicide cases in 2021.” The largest group.”

In her post, she queried, “Is this what “Atma Nirbhar” means in BJP-ruled India?” The Trinamool MP is one of the BJP’s toughest critics.

Some of the most striking photographs from the Covid lockdowns depicted the effort of daily wage labourers to reach their families in communities far from the metropolis where they were trapped.

The national government has often emphasised the need of “Atmanirbhar Bharat,” or self-reliance India, in reducing the country’s reliance on other countries.

Throughout the two years of the pandemic, the opposition has frequently chastised the administration for its handling of many difficulties.

Nonetheless, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly stated that India did better than many other countries during the worst of the outbreak.
