Delhi, August 30th,2022: The Supreme Court on Tuesday closed all proceedings pertaining to the Babri Masjid demolition case of 1992.

The Babri Masjid in Ayodhya was illegally demolished on December 6th, 1992 by a group of Hindu activists called the Vishva Hindu Parishad(VHP) and other allied organizations.

On 6 December 1992, the VHP and the BJP organized a rally at the site involving 150,000 people. The rally turned violent, and the crowd overwhelmed security forces and tore down the mosque.

A subsequent inquiry into the incident found 68 people responsible, including several leaders of the BJP and the VHP.

The Supreme Court noted that with time and in view of the 2019 top court’s verdict on the Ram Janmbhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute case in Ayodhya, the contempt cases don’t survive.

It was also cited by the SC that since the original petitioner of the case, Muhammad Aslam Bhure died in 2010, a substitute petitioner cannot be appointed. Hence, all proceedings of the 1992 demolition case were quashed by the SC this morning.

The demolition of the 16th-century mosque resulted in several months of intercommunal rioting between India’s Hindu and Muslim communities, causing the death of at least 2,000 people.
