National News (21/09/2026): Bank unions are planning a three-day nationwide strike from September 28 to 30, which could affect banking operations and branch-based customer services. With September 26 and 27 being the preceding weekend, some customers may experience disruptions for a longer period depending on the applicable bank holiday calendar and strike participation.
Several banks, including State Bank of India (SBI) and Union Bank of India, have issued advisories asking customers to complete essential banking transactions in advance due to possible disruptions during the strike.
Will Loan EMIs and Credit Card Payments Be Affected?
Loan EMIs and credit card bill payments can generally continue through digital payment channels during the strike. Customers can use internet banking, mobile banking applications, UPI, e-wallets and other available digital payment methods to make scheduled payments without visiting a bank branch.
UPI and mobile banking services are generally available round the clock, although temporary interruptions can occur due to scheduled maintenance or technical issues. Customers should therefore ensure that payments are made before their respective due dates.
ATMs and Automated Deposit and Withdrawal Machines (ADWMs) are also expected to remain available for cash-related requirements. However, customers who normally pay credit card bills in cash at a bank branch may face difficulties if branches remain closed.
Which Banking Services Could Be Disrupted?
Customers requiring branch-based services may face delays during the strike. Services involving physical documents, cheque processing or direct assistance from bank employees could be affected.
Customers who need to complete such transactions in person are advised to do so before the strike begins.
Why Are Bank Unions Going on Strike?
The proposed three-day strike has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU). The unions are demanding the implementation of a five-day banking week along with the resolution of various employee-related issues.
The demands also include improvements and updates to pension-related matters, a uniform dearness allowance formula for pensioners and an option for employees covered under the National Pension System (NPS) to switch to the old pension scheme.
Bank unions under the UFBU had also observed a nationwide strike on September 11, 2026, over these demands.
Overall, customers who depend on digital banking channels should generally be able to make their EMI and credit card payments during the strike, while branch-dependent services may face disruptions.
