Bengaluru spends maximum time on e-commerce sites, Guwahati tops list of Tier II cities

National, 30th June 2023: A recent survey by CyberMedia Research (CMR) offers light on Indians’ internet buying habits in Tier II cities and beyond. According to the report, residents of these cities spend an average of 2 hours and 25 minutes every week shopping online.

Tier II cities such as Guwahati, Coimbatore, and Lucknow are at the forefront of time spent buying on eCommerce platforms. Bengaluru ranks first among Tier I cities, with residents spending an average of 4 hours and 2 minutes each week buying online.

Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, Tata, and Reliance are vigorously fighting for these customers in the Indian market. According to the report, Amazon has garnered consumer trust and is their preferred choice due to its vast presence across India.

According to Prabhu Ram, Head of Industry Intelligence Group at CMR, eCommerce has provided a wide range of options, convenience, and comfort, empowering developing young consumers in Aspirational India (Tier II, Tier III cities, and beyond) to purchase more online and achieve their goals.

Women entrepreneurs and others spend an average of 149 hours each year on eCommerce, with 29% acquiring cellphones worth ₹15,000 to 20,000 online.

When compared to Millennials (47%), Gen Z (the youngest generation) shops online more frequently (51%).

In the last six months, two-thirds of consumers spent up to ₹20,000 on internet shopping. Tier II purchasers’ average online spend (₹ 20,100) is roughly comparable to Tier I buyers’ (₹21,700). Mumbai has the greatest average spend (₹24,200), but Nagpur and Coimbatore have similar online shopping growth tendencies (₹ 21,600).

The survey further states, Amazon is the most popular platform (73%), followed by Flipkart (70%), Meesho (30%), JioMart (20%), and others. Amazon users are 63% satisfied, whereas Flipkart users are 52% satisfied and Reliance Digital users are 46% satisfied.

Amazon is preferred for its low prices (54%), simple return/exchange process (52%), brand confidence (40%), and convenience of buying across India (38%). 73% of consumers in Tier II and Tier I cities have shopped at Amazon in the last six months.
