Black fungus scare: IMA writes to PM Modi for allowing more pharma companies to manufacture anti-fungal drug

Indian Medical Association (IMA) has writtess a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to direct the DCRG to give emergency or short-term permission for the eligible pharmaceuticals to manufacturing the drug in our country, in anticipation of the spreading Mucormycosis disease.

As black fungus infections rise, there has been a sudden rise in demand for the anti-fungal drug Liposomal Amphotericin B (LaMB). Many companies have filed application seeking permission to manufacture the drug.

The drug is presently sold by Mylan, Bharat Serum and Cipla in India. Bharat Serum has ramped up production of the drug by 3x in the past month and a half.

In its letter to the Prime Minister, IMA said, “We wish to bring to your notice an issue we are facing in the clinical management on the raising incidents of black fungus Mucormycosis. As the patients who are Diabetic or immunocompromised need to take steroids as per the treatment protocols and are subjected to continuous oxygen support thereapy, they are becoming more prone to this dreaded disease. It is an Acute Angionvasive fungal disease, needs emergency treatement with local debridement and systemic Amphotericin B drugs.”

“On behalf of IMA we appeal and beseech your kind personal intervention and direct the DCRG to give the emergency or short-term permission for the eligible pharmaceuticals to manufacture the drug in our country, in anticipation of the spreading Mucormycosis disease,” the letter read.

Meanwhile, amid the rising coronavirus COVID-19 cases across the country, the cases of Black Fungus infection is also rising in several states of India. And now four cases of White Fungus infection, which is considered dangerous than Black Fungus, have been reported from Patna, Bihar.
