CISCE National Basketball Championship for Girls Concludes at St. Joseph School Greater Noida

National News (29 August 2026): The CISCE National Basketball Championship for Girls concluded at St. Joseph School, Sector Alpha-1, Greater Noida, following a series of highly competitive matches that brought together talented young basketball players from across the country. The championship featured intense contests in the Under-14, Under-17 and Under-19 categories, with participating teams demonstrating outstanding athletic ability, discipline, teamwork and competitive spirit throughout the tournament.

The semi-final matches in all three age groups were played on Friday evening, setting the stage for the much-awaited finals on Saturday morning.

In the Under-14 category, Karnataka faced West Bengal in the first semi-final, while Maharashtra took on Uttar Pradesh in the second. Karnataka and Maharashtra secured convincing victories in their respective matches to advance to the final.

The Under-17 semi-finals saw Uttar Pradesh compete against Tamil Nadu, while Maharashtra faced Karnataka. Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra emerged victorious from the two encounters and qualified for the championship final.

In the Under-19 category, the semi-final line-up featured Tamil Nadu–Puducherry–Andaman & Nicobar against West Bengal, while Bihar faced the Andhra Pradesh–Telangana team. West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh–Telangana produced strong performances to secure their places in the final.

Considering the demanding schedule and the physical effort required from the players, the tournament organisers decided to begin the final matches at around 10 a.m. on Saturday. The scheduling was aimed at providing adequate recovery time to the players following their semi-final matches the previous evening.

West Bengal Wins Under-19 Championship

The first final of the day was played in the Under-19 category, where West Bengal faced Andhra Pradesh–Telangana.

The match remained competitive, with both teams displaying strong defensive play, attacking skills and determination. West Bengal eventually held its nerve to register a 25–20 victory over Andhra Pradesh–Telangana and secure the CISCE National Championship title and Gold Medal.

Karnataka Triumphs in Under-14 Final

The Under-14 final featured Karnataka and Maharashtra in a closely contested battle for the championship.

Karnataka’s young players maintained their composure throughout the match and eventually defeated Maharashtra 40–35 to finish at the top of the category and lift the championship trophy.

Uttar Pradesh Claims Under-17 Title

The Under-17 final was contested between Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Uttar Pradesh delivered an impressive all-round performance and dominated the contest to register a 47–31 victory over Maharashtra. With the win, Uttar Pradesh were crowned champions in the Under-17 category.

The organisers also announced the Best Player Awards for the three age categories. The awards recognised players who stood out for their individual performances and contribution to their respective teams during the championship.

Under-19: Avni Bansal – West Bengal

The award winners were selected by the technical and officiating panel after evaluating the players’ performances throughout the tournament.

Poonam Chaturvedi Attends Closing Ceremony

The closing ceremony was attended by Poonam Chaturvedi, India’s tallest international female basketball player, who was the Chief Guest for the occasion.

Addressing the players and guests, Poonam Chaturvedi encouraged the young athletes to remain focused on their goals even when faced with criticism, setbacks or failure. She said that such experiences can affect a person’s morale and confidence, but athletes must learn to stay calm, remain determined and continue working towards their objectives.

Her presence and interaction with the young players added a special dimension to the closing ceremony and served as an inspiration for the participants aspiring to build careers in basketball.

Principal Appreciates Organising Team

St. Joseph School Principal Father Jipson Palatty expressed his happiness over the successful conclusion of the national-level championship. He congratulated all participating teams and appreciated the players for demonstrating discipline, sporting ability and a strong competitive spirit.

He also acknowledged the efforts of the organising committee and everyone who contributed to the smooth conduct of the tournament.

Emphasising the importance of teamwork behind the success of such a major sporting event, Father Jipson Palatty said that the contribution of every individual mattered, whether they were Class IV employees, other members of the school staff or students involved in different aspects of the championship.

He highlighted that the successful completion of the CISCE National Basketball Championship was not the achievement of any single individual or group, but a collective accomplishment of the entire St. Joseph School organisation. The championship concluded on a positive note, with the participating young athletes returning with valuable competitive experience, memorable moments and renewed motivation to pursue excellence in basketball.
