Congress backs Pride Month after Rajasthan opposes same-sex marriage

New Delhi, 01st June 2023: The Indian National Congress on Thursday took to social media and Issued a tweet in support for Pride Month (June), stating ‘happy to celebrate and stand for love, equality, and acceptance’ and uploading an image of the rainbow flag, a symbol of the LGBTQIA+ community and also known as the gay pride flag.

Social media users however were quick to point out that the party leadership in the state of Rajasthan also opposed the petitions calling for the legalisation of same sex marriages in the country.

The country now waits for the Supreme Court’s verdict on a clutch of petitions seeking legal recognition for non-heterosexual marriages.

Rajasthan is also one of a few large states that will have elections later this year, increasing the political stakes of the ordeal.
