New Delhi, (13/6/2019): Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi has demanded to hold elections together for both Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat. Singhvi claimed that he has received reports from reliable sources that the EC is considering to hold elections on both the seats at different times.
Abhishek Manu Singhvi while addressing a press conference at party headquarters in New Delhi said that “it will be unconstitutional for the election commission to hold elections on two vacant Rajya Sabha seats after the resignation of Smriti Irani and Amit Shah. We request Election Commission to hold elections on the same day. If the elections are held simultaneously then one seat can win by the ruling party and one seat by the opposition. If elections are held at different times, then it will get affected”.
Singhvi said that Congress party will raise this issue before the Election Commission.
On the question of Sonia Gandhi’s suspicion about Lok Sabha elections, Singhvi said that we do not want to make any big statement from this one altogether, but it is necessary to say that Election Commission gave more importance to the ruling party as compared to the opposition.
He further said that 80 per cent of the parties expressed doubts on the electronic voting machine and this issue was also placed before the Election Commission. We are not saying that the EVM is completely rejected, but it is our demand to link it to VVPAT.
Singhvi said that the Election Commission or the government can give us an electronic machine so that it can be seen whether tampering is possible or not but we have not been given the machine.
On the question related to Priyanka Gandhi’s statement about party workers, Singhvi said that Congress workers in Rae Bareli looked like a rock but did not show up in other parts of UP. For this, the internal inspection of the party is going on where the fault occurred. Priyanka Gandhi had said that Congress in Rae Bareli won due to hard work of Sonia Gandhi and party workers.
