NEW DELHI, Nov. 24—Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Shri Ajay Maken said the Delhi Congress will print the ten salient points in phamplets from the speech of former Prime Minister Dr Man Mohan Singh, delivered in the Rajya Sabha today,  on the “monumental mismanagement in the implementation of demonetization”  in both Hindi and English and distribute them among people standing in queues outside banks and ATMs tomorrow (Friday), November 25 to educate them about the  fallout of the badly planned and executed demonetization exercise by the Modi Government at the Centre.

Addressing a press conference at the DPCC office, Rajiv Bhawan, here today, Shri Ajay Maken said the tremendous response to the “Jan Aakrosh March” organized by the  Delhi Congress in all the 70 Assembly constituencies  last Sunday,  November 20, and the Delhi Congress march to the Prime Minister’s residence on Wednesday, November 23, showed the anguish and anger of the poor and middle class people to the badly executed demonetization drive, which has created  total chaos across the country. Shri Maken said Congress president Smt. Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Shri Rahul Gandhi will lead the Congress party’s “Jan Akrosh Diwas” across the country on November 28, 2016 (Monday) while Delhi Congress will release a booklet on “Note Pe Charcha” on Saturday, November 26, 2016 to enlighten people about the problems being caused on account of the faulty execution of demonetization. Others present at the press conference were chief spokesperson Smt. Sharmistha Mukherjee, spokesperson Smt. Pooja Bahri, Shri Aman Panwar and senior leader Shri Chattar Singh.

Dr Man Mohan Singh, who successfully ran India for 10 years as Prime Minister, is a renowed enconomist.  He also served the country as Finance Minister and had been the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commision of India, Governor Reserve Bank of India and Finance Secretary of India.  It was to the credit of Dr Man Mohan Singh that when the economy of the world was in doldrums and even American banks were going through a difficult phase in 2007, Indian economy held its own due to the far-sighted initiatives taken by Dr Man Mohan Singh as Finance Minister.  It was due to Dr Man Mohan Singh’s standing as an economist that even American president Shri Barak Obama sought out him for his advice.

The 10 salient points in Dr Man Mohan Singh’s speech in the Rajya Sabha today were:

  1. Those who say demonetization is good in the long run should recall a quote by renowned economist  John Keynes that “in the long run, we are all dead”.
  2. Monumental mismanagement has been undertaken in the implementation of demonetization and that’s why 60-65 people have lost their lives so far.
  3. What’s been done can weaken people’s confidence in currency and banking system.
  4. I want to ask the PM that can he name any country where people have deposited their money but are not able to withdraw it.
  5. It will have disastrous effect on economy.
  6. In my opinion, this scheme, the way it has been implemented,  will hurt agriculture and small industries.
  7. Co-operative banking sector which is serving a large number in the rural sector is not operational.
  8. PM said wait for 50 days but for the poor section, even 50 days can be detrimental.
  9. I hope that PM will help us find practical ways to give relief to people suffering.
  10. The national income, that is the GDP, can decline by about two per cent as a result of what has been done done.

Shri Maken said it was a big lapse on the part of Shri Modi that despite the presence of former Prime Minister Dr Man Mohan Singh in the Rajya Sabha, who was Prime Minister for 10 years,  who is not only an experienced economist, but also a former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and Finance Minister of the country,  was not consulted by the Prime Minister before the demonetization exercise. He said the PM should meet Dr Man Mohan Singh and discuss the matter with him. Shri Maken said Dr Man Mohan Singh’s observation that  “what’s been done can weaken people’s confidence in currency and banking system”   needs to be deliberated.
