New Delhi, July 19, 2023: The Maharashtra assembly witnessed a heated debate on Wednesday following a controversial remark made by Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi about the national slogan “Vande Mataram.” Azmi’s comment came during a discussion on the riots in the Sambhajinagar district, where he expressed his disapproval of chanting the slogan.
Azmi stated, “Some people say that if one has to live in India, ‘Vande Mataram’ must be chanted. We cannot do it. We believe only in one god.” His statement triggered a noisy protest from BJP MLAs in the House, leading to disruptions.
Speaker Rahul Narwekar called for calm and urged the legislators to focus on the topic at hand. He deemed Azmi’s comments irrelevant to the discussion and requested that the MLAs direct their attention to the listed issue. However, the protest persisted, leading the Speaker to adjourn the house for ten minutes.
The controversy surrounding Azmi’s remark highlights the sensitivities surrounding patriotic slogans and their interpretation. The BJP MLAs strongly objected to his stance, emphasizing the significance of “Vande Mataram” as a symbol of national unity and patriotism.
The incident underscores the ongoing debates over nationalistic expressions and the diverse perspectives held by individuals belonging to different political parties. As the assembly session resumes, the focus is expected to shift back to the original topic of discussion, the Sambhajinagar riots, which necessitate careful deliberation and attention from the lawmakers.
