Delhi Adds 400 Electric Buses, Extends Fleet to 800 in Environmental Push

New Delhi, Sep 05, 2023: Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal jointly inaugurated 400 electric buses at the IP Depot in the national capital, effectively doubling the city’s electric bus fleet to 800. Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot celebrated the milestone, saying, “The number of electric buses has now gone up to 800 in Delhi. I want to congratulate Delhiites on this.”
Arvind Kejriwal, in a social media post, shared insights into the budget allocation for the new buses, explaining, “Together with the Honorable Lieutenant Governor flagged off 400 new electric buses today and dedicated them to the people of Delhi. These buses are part of the 921 buses under the subsidy scheme, for which a subsidy of ₹ 417 crore has been given by the Centre and the Delhi government will spend ₹ 3,674 crore.”
Delhi now boasts the largest fleet of electric buses in the country. Kejriwal outlined their ambitious future plans, stating, “Our target is to introduce a total of 8,000 electric buses on the roads of Delhi by the end of 2025. At that time, there will be more than 10,000 buses in Delhi, of which 80 per cent will be electric. Very soon Delhi will also be known all over the world for its excellent electric buses.”
The addition of these eco-friendly buses aligns with Delhi’s commitment to combat air pollution and reduce the carbon footprint. As the city continues to invest in sustainable public transportation, it moves closer to becoming a global exemplar in electric mobility solutions.
