Delhi Fights Pollution Crisis with GRAP-4, But Gautam Buddh Nagar’s Silence Raises Concerns

TEN NEWS NETWORK

Greater Noida (18 November 2024): As the combination of pollution, fog, and smog continues to endanger human lives in the Greater Noida area, questions arise about the lack of action from the Gautam Buddh Nagar administration. On Monday, November 18th, the Delhi government announced that all classes, except for 10th and 12th standards, would shift to online mode due to severe air pollution. However, the Gautam Buddh Nagar administration’s silence on this matter has raised concerns.

The hazardous air quality index (AQI) in Delhi has prompted the implementation of GRAP-4 (Graded Response Action Plan) restrictions. Chief Minister Atishi announced the closure of all schools, colleges, and educational institutions, except for classes 10 and 12, which will continue to operate normally for board exams. Online classes will resume for all other students.

The GRAP-4 restrictions aim to curb pollution levels by imposing stringent measures on industrial activities, construction work, and transportation. Key measures include:

– Closure of all schools, colleges, and educational institutions
– Ban on industrial activities, except for essential services
– Suspension of construction work
– Restrictions on vehicular movement

These measures are crucial in mitigating the severe pollution levels, which pose significant health risks, particularly to children and the elderly. The long-term effects of polluted air on lungs and overall well-being cannot be overstated.

In the past, the Indian government had a systematic planning approach, with 5-year plans for the country, districts, and industries. However, since the Modi government abolished the Planning Commission, policy formation has become less structured.

It is imperative that we rethink our approach to sustainable development and prioritize clean air. The Delhi government and central authorities must collaborate with environmental experts to address this crisis. The current situation, where Delhi has become a gas chamber, is unacceptable.

As citizens, we must recognize the urgency of this issue and demand effective solutions. The government must ensure the well-being of its citizens and take concrete steps to address the pollution crisis.

In the meantime, residents of Delhi and surrounding areas are advised to take necessary precautions, such as wearing masks, avoiding outdoor activities, and staying informed about air quality updates.
