New Delhi, 22nd May 2023: The Delhi High Court summoned the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) over the defamation suit filed by a Gujarat-based NGO.

‘Justice on Trial’ worked to file a petition against the documentary by the media house, based on the 2002 Gujarat riots against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and claimed that it ‘cast a slur’ on India’s reputation on an International stage. It also highlighted the portrayal of the Indian judiciary in the documentary.

Advocate Harish Salve, that appeared on behalf of the NGO stated that the 2 part documentary makes defamatory imputations.

The court in response to this issued summonses to the BBC, Wikimedia and the Internet Archives on a criminal suit that seeks to restrain the institutions from publishing the documentary or any other ‘defamatory material’ to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s ideological mentor, RSS and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad.

A senior BJP leader had lodged a complaint and claimed that though the documentary remains banned in India, a Wikipedia page still lists out the links where the film remains accessible.
