Delhi outstrips Bengaluru as Startup capital of India: Economic Survey

New Delhi, January 31: According to the Economic Survey 2022-2023 tabled in Parliament on Monday, Delhi surpassed Bengaluru to become the Start-up Capital of India.

In the last two years, Over 5,000 recognised start-ups were added in Delhi compared to 4,514 start-ups in Bengaluru between April 2019 and December 2021.

The survey said that Bengaluru has been one of India’s largest IT (information technology) hubs with companies including Infosys and Wipro headquartered in the city and hundreds of startups in the IT and knowledge-based sector.

However, according to the Survey, Maharashtra has the highest number of recognised start-ups, with 11,308 in total. As of January 10, 2022, India had over 61,400 start-ups, according to the report.

Furthermore, over 14,000 new startups were added in 2021-22, taking the cumulative number of recognised startups in the country to over 61,400. India thus became the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world after the US and China.

India has 83 unicorns with a total valuation of $277.77 billion, and most of these start-ups are in the services sector.
