New Delhi, December 17, 2024: A roundtable discussion on the “Role of the Private Sector in Transforming Higher Education in India” and a felicitation program for educational entrepreneurs elected as Members of Parliament and Legislative Assemblies was held on 16th Dec in New Delhi. Organized by the Education Promotion Society for India (EPSI), the event brought together prominent academicians, policymakers, and education stakeholders to deliberate on the key initiatives shaping the transformation of India’s higher education sector.
During Addressing the program, Dr. H. Chaturvedi, Alternate president of EPSI and Director General of IILM Institute, reflected on the society’s 20-year journey since its inception on April 5, 2005. He recalled the significant challenges faced during the initial decade, particularly the regulatory hurdles and the rigid structures in private higher education institutions. He mentioned a pivotal period in 2009 when 13 bills concerning higher education were proposed but faced delays in Parliament.
Dr. Chaturvedi acknowledged the progress made over the last decade, citing reforms by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the use of technology to support institutions. He also highlighted the ongoing implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, noting the challenges it presents. He emphasized the commitment of EPSI to overcoming these hurdles and supporting the effective realization of NEP initiatives by both central and state governments.
Speaking to Ten News, Dr. Chaturvedi shared that the outcomes of the roundtable discussion and the conference would be submitted to the Ministry of Education. A white paper detailing EPSI’s recommendations and suggestions for implementing NEP 2020 would also be included. He expressed optimism about the future, predicting that within the next decade, private institutions would become top-tier providers of high-quality education. He noted that while only 200-300 institutions across disciplines such as engineering, management, and medicine currently offer exceptional education, this number is expected to grow significantly as more institutions secure high accreditation scores from bodies like NAAC and NBA.
Dr. Chaturvedi acknowledged the slow pace of NEP 2020 implementation, with only a few recommendations, such as the introduction of four-year degree courses and multidisciplinary programs, adopted by central and select private universities. He affirmed EPSI’s commitment to addressing the challenges and removing obstacles hindering the policy’s implementation, ensuring that NEP 2020 achieves its transformative potential.
The event concluded with participants reaffirming their dedication to elevating India’s higher education sector to global standards while preserving its cultural roots.
