“Economy is estimated to grow at more than 7%, despite the demonetization drive”, – Sh Kanoria, CMD, SREI . #BIMTECHConvocation
“India is presently the world‟s fastest growing major economy and has recorded a GDP
growth rate of 7.9% in 2015-16, highest for any major economy. In 2016-17 too, our
economy is estimated to grow at more than 7%, despite the demonetization drive, again
the fastest among all major economies. Quite naturally the global spotlight is on India.”
These were the words with which Sh Hemant Kanoria, the Chairman and Managing
Director of SREI Infrastructure Finance Limited, started his Convocation day speech at
BIMTECH, on 2nd April 2017. Addressing the students at the convocation, Sh Kanoria
said, “Entrepreneurship is in the DNA of all Indians and entrepreneurship is what will
make the difference in India‟s growth. For any nation, to grow fast and to remain on a
high growth trajectory on a sustainable basis, an investment in capacity addition in its
infrastructure is a must. Apart from physical infrastructure we also need to make
massive investments in our social infrastructure, especially in the fields of education,
healthcare and hospitality. These are vital services which we cannot ignore. As the
Fourth Industrial Revolution or Digital Revolution unfolds, many old jobs and skills will
get redundant, and many new skills will emerge and our skill development infrastructure
has to also gear up to the emerging needs.” He also mentioned that, “India is in a
position to embrace technology must faster as the youth are more tech-oriented and are
the country‟s biggest strength.
A pioneer in the field of infrastructure, Hemant Kanoria has reshaped India‟s
infrastructure landscape with innovative ideas and a strong passion for excellence. He
is an avid follower of the teachings of Swami Vivekanand, which had a profound impact
on him from an early stage and has been instrumental in shaping his values and
principles.
According to Sh. Kanoria, he believes that, “When we work in partnership with
entrepreneurs, we create more value.” Quoting an example of SREI, he said, “We
worked with 60,000 contractors to create more than 600,000 jobs in rural areas through
infrastructure entrepreneurship. When we develop a strategy for building infrastructure,
we should not restrict ourselves only to manufacturing and services sectors. We must
not forget that agriculture still continues to support directly and indirectly two-third of our
entire population. Thus, building the rural infrastructure is equally vital.”
Following that, Sh.Kanoria also mentioned that, “PPP may have created some
temporary problems, but the lessons learnt are translating into sounder contracts,
improvements in the bidding and tendering processes, transparency and objectivity in
project valuations and tariff-setting. The entire episode has made all the stakeholders
much more mature. Our PPP model will evolve stronger and I am quite sure it can well
become a template worth emulating for other countries.”
Concluding his remarks with a reference to Ramayana, Sh Kanoria mentioned about the
four promises given by Shri Ram to his guru, Guru Vashishth, and emphasized on
„Swadhyay‟ or self-study. He said that without that it is very difficult to grow in life.
