Former Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Gowda shares insights on “Relevance of Gandhi in Today’s India” at BIMTECH

On Saturday, the exuberance at BIMTECH Greater Noida touched a new peak as the institute celebrated its 34th Foundation Day through a physical ceremony.

Every year, the Institute celebrates its foundation day on Gandhi Jayanti amid the proximity of its founders, Lt. Basant Kumar Birla and Sarla Birla, to the Gandhian values.

To mark its 34th Foundation Day and Gandhi Jayanti, the Institute this year invited Prof. M.V. Rajeev Gowda, Ex Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) to share insights on “The Relevance of Mahatma Gandhi in Today’s India”.

In his address, Gowda examined some of the contemporary issues and talked about how Gandhi would have reacted to these issues that seem to dominate the headlines including religious intolerance, issues related to diversity, freedom of speech and expression.

He spoke, in great length, about how people have moved away from essential teachings of religion which are about peace and harmony. “Today, religion is often used to assault people, to divide people. Nation building project is all about overcoming these divisions and celebrating diversity.”

Gowda also spoke about Gandhi’s ‘huge’ effort in ending oppression of caste and some of the global leaders who were inspired by Gandhi including Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr.

In his opening address, Dr. H. Chaturvedi, Director, BIMTECH said that the world today remembers Mahatma Gandhi who taught us the power of truth, peace, non violence, satyagrah and swadeshi, he also taught us to feel the pain of others. “During the last 19 months of Covid, we have seen a lot of pain, deaths, sufferings, stress, fear and hunger, in these troubled times, we remember Gandhi ji who has taught us to be empathetic towards the suffering of others.”

Dr. Chaturvedi also paid tribute to BIMTECH founders during his address.

Towards the end of the event, BIMTECH conferred awards to some of the best performing scholars and professors at the institute.
