New Delhi, August 20, 2023: The German embassy in India has commended India’s digital infrastructure as one of the nation’s remarkable success stories. This acknowledgment follows Germany’s Federal Minister for Digital and Transport, Volker Wissing, utilizing India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for a transaction and expressing his fascination with the system.

In a tweet shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), the German embassy praised India’s digital advancement, particularly highlighting UPI’s capability to facilitate instantaneous transactions. The tweet read, “One of India’s success stories is digital infrastructure. UPI enables everybody to make transactions in seconds. Millions of Indians use it. Federal Minister for Digital and Transport @Wissing was able to experience the simplicity of UPI payments first hand and is very fascinated!”

The embassy supplemented the tweet with a video showcasing Minister Wissing interacting with the UPI system.

Minister Wissing’s visit to India was prompted by his attendance at the G20 summit. During his visit, he participated in the G20 Digital Ministers Meeting held in Bengaluru on August 19. The German Embassy further informed on X, “G20 Digital Ministers meeting in Bangalore is about to start. Minister @Wissing&our great host Minister @AshwiniVaishnaw have an insightful discussion on deepening Indo-German cooperation in IT and especially AI through our Digital Dialogue.”

The UPI, an innovative mobile-based payment system originating in India, offers swift and round-the-clock payment solutions. This system has garnered international attention, leading countries such as Sri Lanka, France, UAE, and Singapore to collaborate with India on pioneering fintech and payment solutions.

Notably, India and Singapore embarked on a groundbreaking agreement in February 2023 to interlink their payment systems. France also embraced India’s UPI mechanism, establishing an agreement to enable UPI transactions at the iconic Eiffel Tower.

Germany’s recognition of India’s digital strides adds to the growing global acknowledgment of India’s advancements in technology and financial innovation.
