Greater Noida News (07/05/2026): A major step towards strengthening India’s healthcare innovation ecosystem was taken on Wednesday as Government Institute of Medical Sciences inaugurated Uttar Pradesh’s first dedicated MEDTECH Regulatory Clinic at its Centre for Medical Innovation (CMI). The initiative has been established in collaboration with Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council through its Regulatory Affairs and Policy Advocacy (RAPA) division to provide structured regulatory and clinical support to emerging medical technology startups.

The clinic was formally inaugurated by Dr. G. N. Singh, former Drug Controller General of India and Advisor to the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He described the initiative as a significant milestone for the state’s healthcare and innovation landscape, stating that India’s MedTech sector requires not only innovation but also strong regulatory and policy support to transform ideas into market-ready healthcare solutions.

The event was attended by Ms. Sonia Gandhi, Deputy General Manager and Head of Regulatory Affairs and Policy Advocacy at BIRAC, who participated as the Guest of Honour. During the inaugural programme, she conducted the first regulatory mentoring and advisory session for startups associated with the clinic. The interaction focused on regulatory approvals, quality standards, policy frameworks, clinical validation procedures and commercialization strategies for indigenous medical technologies.

Officials said the newly launched MEDTECH Regulatory Clinic will function as a dedicated facilitation platform for innovators, clinicians, entrepreneurs and researchers working in the medical technology sector. The centre aims to provide guidance related to licensing procedures, clinical trial pathways, quality systems, regulatory compliance and market access support for healthcare innovations developed in India.

During his visit to the Centre for Medical Innovation, Dr. G. N. Singh interacted with several startups currently being incubated at GIMS. Among the innovators showcased was Matri, a healthcare startup that completed clinical trials at GIMS and also gained national recognition through its appearance on the television programme Shark Tank India. The presentation highlighted the rapidly expanding startup and research ecosystem being developed within the institution.

The initiative aligns closely with the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat mission, which focuses on encouraging indigenous manufacturing and reducing dependence on imported medical devices. Experts associated with the project believe the clinic will help accelerate innovation-driven healthcare manufacturing and strengthen India’s position in the global MedTech sector.

Officials also highlighted that in November last year, GIMS was selected as a BIRAC-RAPA Nodal Centre under the Delhi-NCR network, alongside premier institutions such as All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and Regional Centre for Biotechnology. GIMS became one of only four institutions chosen for this specialised network supporting healthcare innovation and regulatory facilitation.

Speaking at the event, Dr. G. N. Singh said India is entering a transformative phase in medical technology and healthcare innovation, but startups require integrated support systems involving regulation, policy advocacy and clinical research to succeed. He added that the MEDTECH Regulatory Clinic could emerge as a model initiative for the country by bringing innovation, clinical validation and regulatory mentoring together under one ecosystem.

Dr. Rahul, Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for Medical Innovation at GIMS, said the initiative has been designed to bridge the gap between innovation and regulatory processes for healthcare startups. According to him, the institution aims to create a comprehensive ecosystem where innovators can access incubation facilities, mentorship, clinical validation and translational healthcare opportunities through a single platform.

The Director of GIMS also reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to research-driven healthcare transformation and affordable medical solutions, stating that the growing innovation ecosystem at GIMS reflects its vision of promoting accessible and technology-driven healthcare services for society.
