India deserves a seat on the UN Security Council — Col. Gopal Karunakaran

Addressing the students, Col. Karunakaran delivered a powerful speech, urging young delegates to understand global geopolitics and India’s rising importance in world affairs.

He said that, India is the largest country in the world by population, has a fast-growing economy, and a strong military presence. It is time for India to be in the Security Council and help shape global decisions. The structure of the United Nations, highlighting the influence of the five permanent members who hold veto power. He reminded students that every MUN participant must reflect on India’s rightful place in global governance.

Lessons from the UN: Dialogue, Empathy and Peace

Col. Gopal Karunakaran emphasized that the UN was formed after World War II to replace conflict with dialogue. Sharing real-world examples, he urged the students to understand the human dimensions behind global crises. As a delegate, you must learn not only to present your views but also to listen empathetically. Whether it’s Gaza or Israel, you realize real people are suffering. Dialogue—not war—is the solution.

He vividly described life in conflict zones, recalling his own service as a UN peacekeeping officer posted along the Iraq–Kuwait border, where officers from 30 countries worked together to maintain peace. You realise the human condition is the same everywhere. People want peace, happiness, and a better future for their families.

He also reflected on witnessing the harsh impacts of war on Iraqi civilians—women and children walking miles for water—and how UN teams tried to help.

Turning his address towards the future, the Chief Guest urged students to recognize major global forces that will shape their careers and lives:

Artificial Intelligence, whose long-term impact no one fully understands.

Multipolar world order, with the US, China, India and others shaping global power.

Climate change, which will remain a major global crisis.

Global poverty and migration, pushing millions to cross borders in search of better lives.

Rising inequality, creating social and economic tensions worldwide.

Regardless of whether you study commerce, humanities, or science—you must understand geopolitics, he advised. He recommended students read books by author Tim Marshall, including Prisoners of Geography, to deepen their understanding of global affairs.

In his closing message, the Chief Guest encouraged delegates to preserve their MUN experience. Reflect and write down everything you learned in these two days. Keep it with you—it will guide you as you grow, he said.
