New Delhi, 21st June 2023: To promote tribal products, 34,000 yoga mats acquired only from tribal craftsmen in the country were used at government events today, to commemorate the International Yoga Day.
The Tribal Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (TRIFED), a national-level cooperative body mandated to bring about the socio-economic development of the country’s tribals, has procured the yoga mats adorned with designs and motifs representative of various tribal communities.
According to a statement made by the Ministry of Ayush, these mats will be used for a variety of events, workshops, and training programmes planned for International Yoga Day.
This effort demonstrates the government’s dedication to uplift tribal populations and celebrate India’s unique cultural heritage. According to the government, each mat stands as a lively monument to the rich cultural legacy of India’s tribes, encompassing their legends, folklore, and artistic prowess.
The Madurkathi mats, also known as Madur, are among the featured mats that are skillfully woven in West Bengal from a reed called Madur Kottir. These mats are vital in West Bengal’s hot and humid climate and carry considerable significance in religious rites due to their non-conductive qualities and outstanding sweat-absorbing capacities.
Furthermore, the government activities will feature Sabai Grass yoga mats, which represent the deep link between the tribals of Mayurbhanj, Odisha, and the lush surroundings around them.
Due to their unique composition, these mats provide great absorbency and comfort, making them a long-lasting and important friend for yoga enthusiasts and practitioners.
The Indian government hopes to promote indigenous craftsmanship, empower tribal artisans, and in-still pride in the nation’s cultural history through this undertaking.
