New Delhi, 4 September 2022: In the wake of growing assault against teachers, a group of teachers from government schools with the Govt Schools Teacher’s Association, Delhi met with Delhi’s deputy chief minister and education minister, Manish Sisodia and sent him a document requesting legislation to make attacking teachers on school grounds a non-bailable offense.
General Secretary, GSTA, Ajay Veer Yadav has stated that the hostility against the government school teachers by the parents and students is drastically increasing. “Recently, a teacher from the SBV Nand Nagri School was assaulted by the parents of a student when he was narrating their ward’s indiscipline to them. They attacked and hit the teacher even after he fainted, resulting in grave injuries,” he explained.
Such incidents have become common and we want the government to declare any criminal act or assault against teachers on the school premises a non-bailable offense, he urged. Agreeing to the demand, Manish Sisodia ensured them that this will be taken to the cabinet soon.
The GSTA also accused the Director, DoE of visiting the schools in disguise, in the manner of a raid and suspending teachers merely on verbal comments from the students. “All these suspensions are untenable, ultra vires of due process and against the principles of natural justice,” Yadav stated.
“It has been over two years since the teaching community has been serving selflessly in COVID19 duties, and to date, they get deputed for that,” GSTA said. “We demand that all the teachers deployed for the covid19 duties should be relieved without delay and the Directorate should take stern actions as earlier the Director had earlier blamed the teachers for not reporting back to the schools when they are being grounded between DM offices and Directorate,” they added.
These crucial demands of the teaching community require your immediate cognisance and implementation to ensure world-class functioning in the Directorate of Education, the GSTA concluded in the meeting. While Sisodia has offered relief to the teachers stating that they will look into the matter in a time-bound manner.
