New Delhi, 4 September 2022: Excise department of the Delhi Government has opened liquor shops at several Delhi Metro stations to accommodate consumers’ demand.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has given the Delhi Consumers’ Cooperative Wholesale Store Ltd (DCCWS) permission to build up shops on commercial terms and construct liquor stores at more than a half-dozen metro stations.”The decision was made in order to improve sales due to the growing footfall,” the officials said.

The excise department maintained, “Metro stations have a high footfall and that is a big factor in ensuring access to liquor products and thereby more revenue. Some vends have already opened at bigger Metro station premises and others will soon come up.”

“Additionally, we intend to grant licenses to wine and beer establishments that will only sell drinks with a low alcohol content, such as beer, rather than stronger drinks like rum and whisky,” they added.

Along with liquor stores, commercial centers, shopping malls, and other establishments will be located at metro stations to increase opportunities for sales. The metro stations include Badarpur, Dwarka, Karol Bagh, Rajouri Garden and Mundka, according to the senior Excise department officer. The DMRC was also being persuaded to approve govt-authorised liquor shops at other stations, he said.

These shops at Metro stations are planned to be more spacious and suitable for a better consumer experience. The official also stated, “We are attempting to ensure that the shops have at least 300 square feet of space, but some adjustment is being made as smaller shops must be rented with no other option left. Additionally, wherever metro premises do not have shops, nearby areas are being explored for opening vends.”
