Ahmedabad, 12th June 2023: The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a cyclone alert for Saurashtra and Kutch coasts in Gujarat as Cyclone Biparjoy is expected to hit the Gujarat coast.

Officials in the Kutch district have begun to relocate residents from low-lying regions to temporary shelters. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel visited the State Disaster Operation Centre on Sunday to assess coastal districts’ readiness to deal with any disaster crisis.

As Cyclone Biparjoy strengthened into an “extremely severe cyclonic storm,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi called a review conference today. Biparjoy, a ‘very strong’ cyclonic storm, is expected to make landfall in Gujarat on Thursday.

The flight operations in Mumbai were disrupted Sunday evening due to cyclone Biparjoy churning over the Arabian Sea. Heavy rain and strong winds were reported in the city as the cyclone’s intensity grew dramatically.

Tithal Beach, a major tourist spot on the Arabian Sea coast of Gujarat, has been temporarily restricted to visitors due to heavy waves.

The cyclone is expected to cross Saurashtra and Kutch, as well as the adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan), near Jakhau Port (Gujarat), by Thursday noon as a very severe cyclonic storm with maximum sustained wind speeds of 125-135 kmph gusting to 150 kmph.
