I.T.S Dental College, Hospital & Research Centre Greater Noida observed  ‘ World No Tobacco Day’ on Friday, May 30th 2014.

The I.T.S Dental College also took the initiative to spread awareness among the general public and encourage them to quit tobacco use through various programs such as “Talk on Oral Cancer”, “Skits”, & “Personal Experiences of Patients who have Quit Tobacco”,  and organizing a Guest Lecture to observed the “World No Tobacco Day”

The main focus of this event was to educate the masses about the ill effect of tobacco, on one’s health and also on the health of other, specially youth of today who have misguided themselves in this health hazard.

On this occasion the Chief Guest and also Chief speaker of the day Dr. Sandeep Chatrath , CEO Dharamshila Hospital , New Delhi. He addressed the gathering and discussed various ill effect of tobacco on the wellbeing. He emphasized that dental surgeon are the first ones who see the oral cavity and can play a vital role in diagnosis a precancerous lesion or any other change related to tobacco.

He praised the management, faculty and students of ITS-The Education Group for spreading the awareness in the society against tobacco use in the society, specially among the young generation of our country.  He also showed keen interest in organizing more awareness camps in college and other associated rural areas.

 

Dr. Puneet Ahuja, Principal and Dr. Anmol S Kalha, Director PG Studies, I.T.S Dental College addressed the gathering and appealed to everyone to contribute to the best of their ability to make each day a ‘No Tobacco Day’. They also added that the concerned authorities should take appropriate measures to control this serious menace fromsociety and also implement strict tobacco laws.

 

A talk was given by Dr. Puneet Ahuja on “Oral Cancer” .He said smoking causes chest infection, heart diseases, lungs problem and cancer. A smoker can inhale 15% of tobacco in his body and give 85% to the environment. Further adding to the facts according to a report by WHO, tobacco use is one of the leading preventable causes of mortality.
Tobacco smoking will cause the death of nearly six million people globally each year.
Unless we act quickly, it will cause the lives of up to eight million people by 2030, of which more than 80% smokers live in low-and middle-income countries, like India which have maximum cases of Oral- Facial Cancer in the past few decades. A Quiz competition was also held between the different teams of the college in which faculty and students take part.

Taking a further step towards the goal of no tobacco, a “Tobacco Cessation Counselling Booth” was also established in the Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology to educate and motivate the patients to choose a Tobacco Free Life.
