New Delhi, July 8, 2022: In conversation with Ten News, the Passport Man of India, Dr. Dnyaneshwar Mulay, a member of the NHRC and a former Indian Foreign Service diplomat shared his advice for the young UPSC aspirants.
“I feel that anybody who wants to do Civil Services, should really identify challenges, list them out. Whether it is about languages, personality, communication, schedule of study,” he said. “Because the study part, in my view, is easy. It is not just a test for your intelligence, it is a test of your communication skills, how you organize your thoughts, how you present your thoughts.”
“The competition is not heavy, it’s fierce because 1.2 lakh appear for this exam, and in the final, only 700-1000 people are selected,” Dr. Mulay stated. “Within that 700-1000, IAS vacancies could be 100-150, maximum,” he said. “So, the people (who want to be IAS) must remember that their chances are 0.1%,” he explained. “There is an element of chance that you might not make it, so you need to have your plan B ready,” he advised. Dr. Mulay also advised the aspirants to move on with their life after 2 – 3 chances, “Opportunities are immense,” he said.
“I would like to advise everyone who wants to take Civil Services,” Dr. Mulay said. “Look at your heart and ask what you really want to be,” he said. “Collector, commissioner, secretary; these are all positions, these are not what you want to be,” he said.
“Lots of civil officers are doing great work,” he said. “But many are lost in the system.” He stated this to be the reason why the country is achieving greatness in various spheres. “The backlog is there because systems have to improve. Dr. Mulay emphasized that one’s dreams should not be job titles. It should be ambitions and aspirations of wanting to do something in life or wanting to bring some kind of change in the country or world.
